It became one of the great moment’s of shared learning at Artizan Street library and community centre. On May13 2024, Tessa Hunkin of Hackney mosaic project offered a workshop on Artizan Street. A was later revealed on the other side of Artizan street library on Petticoat Lane, across the way from the estate in the Summer of 2024.
Hosting university college students and residents from the locality of Tower Hamlets, the Library brought together all to take part. Some were directed from platforms where local events are promoted. In this particular area, the City of London is known for its trade and commerce. The project is based in Hackney and opens the view to historic features in London where the estates lie. From local stories and familiar scenes of life- there’s is to bring a piece of beauty and build it along the roads, the walls of residential and recreational areas. The coming of people and trade through London hearkens back to the history of the Roman roads built as a way to protect the army, connect cities and move goods. We see a resilience and presence much like the modern market, bringing the people of the world, textiles that come from raw material. There is still an influence on modern roads in Britain.
The project liaised with Toynbee Hall who marked a year of celebrating the heritage of Petticoat Lane in December, 2023.
