Based on a short that I directed for a community group, I gathered friends in directing a film prepared for the month of October – ‘To Be Nigerian.’ This film in particular was to speak on this thing that we call respect. Two years later, I made a readaption of the short producing a stop motion animation of two real life friends in a sit-down conversation about greeting culture As two Millenial Brits, they recall their individual experiences with extended family, friends and guests. With regard to behavioural codes, Africa continues to be remarked for the signals of eldership. It is a declation of unity and and acknowlegment of the gracious lessons taught by elders. The customary aunty-uncle is parodied in dialogue. Young Nigerians in diaspora are existing and thriving Whether or not they live apart from their kin due to circumstance or distance, the importance of healthy dynamics is well understood in the family. This act of greeting retains strength in society and it is a sign of vitality and affirms both the person speaking and the person spoken to in their endeavours therefore, it is a virtuous act. The forging of relationship and bonds with the elder generation enables partnership- this is what is important about respect. Today, the presence of our culture is felt locally and regionally, just see how it crosses into the dialogue of entertainment, politics and education in the UK and internationally! In my visual, you can follow along as the two share the fails and successes of their peers who attempt to show their flair- the two lightheartedly save face as a way of respect. We try to understand what it is to ‘give them the lay of the land’ when it comes to expectations of our contemporaries.. As ethnographers would, the two see that anything contrary to these customs would be regarded as ‘other.’ Confidently addressing the elder is encouraged and it is a value that is instilled in the younger generation. This piece explores the subject respect and this piece explore what it is to be passed on. Stop motion animation is awonderful form of communication and you get to witness my editorial-directorial offering.
